A creamy potato casserole layered with three distinct cheeses, perfect for holiday gatherings or cozy weeknight dinners.
Ingredients

- 4 large russet potatoes (about 2 pounds), peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded
- 1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (optional)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish, followed by half of the onions. Season with salt and pepper.
- In a medium saucepan, combine the heavy cream, milk, minced garlic, and nutmeg (if using). Heat over medium heat until just simmering.
- Remove the saucepan from heat and gradually stir in the cheddar, Gruyère, and Parmesan cheese until melted and smooth.
- Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potato layer, then repeat with the remaining ingredients.
- If using breadcrumbs, combine them with melted butter and sprinkle over the top.
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
- Allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving.
